March Heatrocks, Vol. 2

The March Heatrocks have been broken into two volumes, get the first here ! Download March Heatrocks: Vol. 2 here Kicking off this volume of the March Heatrocks is Starlito, formerly known as All Star, which I previously blogged about here . Renaissance Gangster is fresh and "Weed Smoker Music" is as good a description of his genre as anything else. The song is pretty self explainatory, he captures a mood well. "Straight A student might focus to it/Just don't defocus to it" Changing it up but keeping it on track I was struck by this Don Cherry and Brent Roesenberg tune "In A Geodetic Dome." The song is basically a four minute long trumpet solo. There are repetitive hits on a gong very quietly in the background, an perhaps a few other equally quiet sounds. The point here is the trumpet, and a beautiful piece of playing it is. Slow and melancholy it's also reflective. Boom Bap Project haven't been active in some time but five years ago they dro...

November Heatrocks

Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons. You will find it is to the soul what a water bath is to the body. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes Oh shit! It took me far to long to get up in here with November's heatrocks. Y'all didn't really think I'd drop October on ya and split? Yeah, I feel you. But I didn't I'm right here! November was great and in getting settled back in Seattle I also got to catch up on music both locally and nationally. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm getting heavy into some electronic tunes. Towards the beginning of the month I was listening to this comp Aquatic Lab Sessions and the track “Right Here” from Flash just struck me. Reminding me of Burial and why I got into dubstep to begin with this song is haunting. The vocals will stick with you and the beat is hypnotic. Great stuff! Yesterday I took the time to give BK-One's album Radio Do Canibal a spin and it rocks. Another great release from RSE this year. What else is ...

Grynch "Chemistry" EP

Image
To anyone who wasn't lucky enough to make it out to the Nectar last night, it sounds like we missed a great show! But Grynch is a cool guy and is giving away the music he was performing for free , which in these tough times is a nice price. While I'm struggling with the fact that it really was over a year and a half ago that I was writing for the PI and covering the record release party for his last official full length, My Second Wind , the fact is times have changed and Grynch is moving forward like the rest of us. Change is a topic of dissection here by the King of Ballard, namely on the tremendous track “Time.” In my five short years in the 206 I saw many things change around my neighborhood – Capitol Hill for the curious – and every time I get back to the town I notice more things different than were the same. Grynch takes it back even further and speaks on things only natives of the city can relate to, but the theme is something we all can understand and his message to ...

Grynch lays claim to the crown

As bad as this may sound some rappers just sound tight when you listen to them flow. Of course the problem with this is that a lot of times these rappers that “sound” good aren’t usually saying anything of substance. Grynch happens to have one of the nicest flows in Seattle and he always has something to say. What at first sounds like a project birthed out of any town in the states, My Second Wind is anything but formulaic by Seattle standards. With a wide arrangement of both producers and guest emcee’s along for the ride Grynch delivers a project that hits many emotions and expands an ever growing diverse local Hip Hop scene. Grynch’s best quality as an emcee is his ability to capture your attention as soon as his voice graces your speakers. He spits in a manner that sounds so effortless you would think that he has been at it for a lifetime. In truth however the young John Overlie has only just started, celebrating his 21st birthday last year. This hasn’t prevented him from enjoying l...
