The Six Sounds of Blues Ideology Projects Celestial Pathways

Image
What led me to this social music I find myself so enraptured by today? I grew up a fiend for hiphop, I found my way into working with rappers as a member of the media and as an aspiring label owner . I found my way to being a fiend for substances and in the process let my love for the art form slip away. Recently a question was posed on a jazz subreddit I lurk on about what was your doorway into the music. I was instantly flooded with a memory of my High School student chemistry teacher Ms. Simmons sharing a burned copy of Kind of Blue with me. The fuse was lit, and I didn’t dislike that record - but it would take some years to get me back to it and to dig deeper. When I started exploring dollar bins at an assortment of record stores as a Freshman in Seattle and picked the brains of diggers I’d begun to cross paths with my interest in this distinctly American artform started to enlarge. At this point it was all about the samples, although at times I would find things that I enjo...

Tunes From The Whip: Billy Woods & Moor Mother "Brass" (2020)

Image
Music is always better in the whip. While I have long considered CDs dead I found myself with a bind full of joints itching to be listened too. Upon picking up a commute for work I found myself really digesting these random tunes and even going back into time and burning new ones. Enter my review series Tunes From the Whip .

TML Radio: Sabbath Sessions, Vol. 12

Mizo and I linked up one mo' gin! As the end of the year approaches and we start contemplating the best sounds we heard this year (many documented right here, crazy to think we have been at this Sunday vibes thing for over three months now!) we knew it was time to lay down one more pure Jazz sesh. Given that one volume of our best of the year mixes will be entirely Jazz we figured this round would be best served to touch base on older sounds of this improvised social music we both love. We open with a Cannonball Adderley and David Axelrod jam espousing the traits of a Gemini over an atmospheric groove. As it plays along you will see some familiar names from the past and the more recent scene. Mizo dropped in a Freddie Hubbard jam and the tunes spoke to me in a way that I couldn't refuse an Irreversible Entanglements tune from their debut I recently swooped from IA's bandcamp. Hopefully the sounds here will soundtrack this gray and drizzly Sunday with peace, joy and som...
