What is the power in wordless music? Instrumental gems that capture a vibe, uplift our spirits, tug on our heartstrings, set a mood or just play in the background to any number of activities? As a person who pretty much wants to have music playing 24/7/365 I have an affinity for this style. Of course there's a vast array of “instrumental” music to be heard. From stoner and doom rock to ambient soundscapes, jazz to hiphop beats, collaged and sample-delica trip hop and electronic leaning grooves, this list is infinite. When I first was diving into the art of diggin in the crates there was always talk of library records amongst the heads schooling me but they never seemed to materialize. The reality is that by the time I was getting dusty fingers looking for records these elusive joints had already been snatched, sampled and stashed away by a generation or two before me. My sonic journey has taken me through many sounds, styles, artists, and scenes. Preparing for this interview was cause to reflect on when I first heard the name Carlos Niño , and I think I can pinpoint it near the beginning of the LA beat era . Since that time his name has floated in and out of my ears depending on how tuned in I was. In more recent times his name has been near the top of my most listened to and cherished artists. These connections, these diverse and non linear weavings of activity are part of what make Carlos Niño’s music so inspired to my ears. He seems to just get it. He makes uplifting, soulful, joyous, energetic music - even when it’s calm and ethereal. As I’ve traveled a new path in my life over the last nearly five years, cultivating and developing spiritual and meditative practices to enhance and enlarge my essence, music has been intrinsically connected. Five years ago I was living in hell. Broken and full of despair, a path forward arose. A life lived fast, with no real care for anything or anyone had caught up to me. I’d spent my twenties chasing dreams of working in the music industry born out of a passion for sounds that I can’t put into words. As my perception voided out anything mattering I closed doors and stopped listening. Failing to heed warnings from friends and family, failing to turn into that which had always been there for me, music ceased to matter. This isn’t a dirge of self pity. That path forward was a path back to listening. A path back to that which always inspired and uplifted me. The sounds changed, the styles evolved. I’m a hiphop head. Love the boom bap. The message.
