Diggin' In Mizo's Crates: Can "Future Days" (1973)

Image
For those of you that are familiar with the weekly Sabbath Sessions mix (posted right here every Sunday!) you’ve probably picked up on my partner Mizo & I’s differing tastes in sounds. We unite in the realms of jazz, electronic and hiphop but where I find my ears rooted in the foundational sounds of the sampling aesthetic Mizo grew up on the more classic rock oriented frequencies. Of course our journeys through the auditory waves have traversed many styles and if the Sabbath Sessions are any indication we certainly can’t be pinned down to specific boxes. In an effort to curb our severe addiction to vinyl we started trading records for the other to digest and explore. The stack I have at the moment came from him upon my request to broaden my “rock” horizons and introduce me to some grooves in that vein that he thought I’d appreciate. And fittingly enough, to follow up last week's Paternoster review , the first joint I pulled out of the pile he supplied me with was Future Days ...

NA Reserve Review: Paternoster "Paternoster" (1972)

The best music captures a feeling, regardless of the style, sound, era, or instrumentation; it's all about the energy. Of course to each of our ears those things become incredibly subjective and dependent upon our upbringing, our cultural surroundings, our education and something else intangible that is most easily summed up by one word: feeling. These qualities manifest what we fill our ears with and point us in the direction of where to dig and what to dig for as we explore the vast array of sonic frequencies available to us in these days of streaming audio and more musical options than anyone could ever sift through. Rock music, generically defined by me as guitar focused, has many levels and sub genres that all aim to pin things down to a finite box. But these finite definitions don’t serve us as we venture down the rabbit whole of deeper exploration. As a style that has existed for a very long time there is much to ignore and much that just isn’t for everyone. Thus the power...

TML Radio: Sabbath Sessions, Vol. 39

Another solo go round for y’all. I’m out of town but had to lay one down in the lounge before hitting the road! Mizo will be back soon so just hold tight as I hit ya with a decidedly more linear mix of grooves pretty much rooted in exactly what I tend to dig - styles connected to what hiphop producers have been sampling since the inception of the art form. Even still plenty of our trade mark samba inspired blends and enough change ups to keep you guessing for the duration. I can’t believe next week will be number 40, thank you all for riding with us! Don Ellis “Chain Reaction” Madlib “Latin Negro” Ray Manzarek “Begin The World Again” Commodores “I Like What You Do” Cali Agents “The Good Life” Joe Williams “Here’s That Rainy Day” Rob Base & D.J. E.Z. Rock “It Takes Two (Tuff Audio Mix Take 2)” King Curtis “Walkin” The Allman Brothers Band “Southbound” Nas ft. Quan “Just A Moment” Holly Near “Family Promise” Pam Grier “Long Time Woman” Freddie Gibbs & Madlib ft. Pusha T & Ki...

TML Radio: Sabbath Sessions Vol. 35

Happy Sunday y’all! Mizo & I connecting once more live and direct from the lounge for another session to ease the end of your weekend too. This week we veered into some different zones, opening with a rock sequence and keeping that theme sporadically placed throughout the set. Of course we touch on some of our usual grooves as well between the random electronic sounds that act as perfect transition points, a touch of jazz (for all our social music fans out there don’t worry, we just saving sounds for next weeks all jazz jam), as well as some rap and soul grooves sprinkled in there for you ear expansion. As we traverse this last year of strange and chaotic times, these sounds we mash up have captured our feelings, our weather and our hope. Thank you for listening and exploring sonic territories with us! Big Star “O My Soul” The Kinks “Big Sky” George Harrison “Wah Wah” Linkin Park “One Step Closer (Rock Mix)” Mort Garson “Cathedral Pleasure” Carlos Nino & Iasos “Going Home...

TML Radio: Sabbath Sundays, Vol. 7

Last weekend Mizo & I both moved our collections, he to a new residence and me from a storage locker in PDX up here to Tacoma! All we we have been communicating about how excited we were to have a clearer view of our collections, the surprises found that were forgotten about and what kind of adventure this edition would have in store. I might be biased but I think we definetly evolved here. For all the past episodes vast array of sounds, this go round found us striking some untouched acoustics, continuing what we like to view as a conversation via music. He kicked off this one and we ran with it for almost 2.5 hours! So press play and relax to the textures present as you take in this grey Sunday.
