Some big changes are taking place around the Lounge! After three years in the same space it’s time to move into a more permanent location. Big things, big things! Mizo & I up to no good once more on a Sunday afternoon! This week marks Mizo’s triumphant return to the lounge! Just in time for out latest straight Jazz jams. You know what to expect, some old, some new, some fusion in the classic sense and some fusion in a more modern sense - an idea he and I have been tossing around for awhile now which leans into the sonic idea that hiphop and electronic tunes can be rooted in Jazz as well. To that end we welcome a “chopped not slopped” Thundcat jam, a recently unearthed groove from P’Taah, some spiritual chants from Alice Coltrane amongst some other mixtures from wax or created on the fly via our creative blending. After a week of unbearable heat things have cooled off around the PNW but Mizo and I showed up in the lab with stacks of wax to keep the thermometer rising. This week there was an overarching sense of melancholy via a number of soul grooves meant to tug on the heartstrings and capture that pain that is heartbreak. It’s not all sad boy, emo feels however as you are blessed with some zoned out tunes that walk a line between ambient and electronic as well as our usual jazz jumps and a handful of rap numbers with some folk and hints of rock and world jams to round out the journey. Once again, back is the incredible! Naw, just Mizo and I laying down some jams like we always do for your Sabbath day. Even though the sun has departed and we are back to our usual grey Pacific Northwest atmosphere the last ten days of heat and sun clearly rubbed off on our selections for this go round. Filled with bright and soulful grooves, this week we kept it mostly upbeat and BBQ ready. Lots of soul, lots of funk, and of course styles on styles on styles. We took an opportunity to pay homage to the deceased Black Rob lacing his most famous acappella over a techno banger, explored some of the outer realms of the LA beat and Jazz scene, traveled back in time with an assortment of classic soul tunes, journeyed to a few other continents and generally kept it moving. Whenever Mizo & I get back into the lounge after an extended time away it always feels good to lay down some sounds and see where this sonic journey we have undertaken brings us. This week's edition is no different as we kept the vibes mostly deep, meditative with tributes to musicians gone and sounds of days past, playing with how these grooves might grow and flourish in the context of today's sonic happenings. It’s as if a trance fell upon us and we were no longer conscious of our process, just allowing the tunes to speak through the speakers. Kick back, relax, and travel with us.
